ATC - LOGOSTROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK: ATC is proud to announce availability of the free-standing SCS120 Pro and flush in-wall mounting SCS120iW Pro as new flagship 15”/375 mm subwoofers — duly designed to elevate professional monitoring systems to new levels and engineered to support the specialist manufacturer’s larger mid-field and main monitors, delivering exceptional low-frequency extension, expanded dynamic range, and seamless integration for stereo, surround, and immersive formats, including Dolby Atmos — as of November 24…

The two new models build upon the success of the free-standing SCS70 Pro and flush in-wall mounting SCS70iW Pro 12”/300 mm active subwoofers, but both feature a new hand-built 15”/375 mm sub-bass driver, developed and manufactured by ATC at its facility in Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK. Ultimately, all driver components — from the drive system to the suspension — have been precisely optimised using the latest analysis tools available at both small and large signal level. The advanced transducer combines a powerful short-coil motor system featuring optimised airflow and cooling with a carbon-paper composite cone, and results in deep, clean bass from 120Hz down to below 20Hz — and all with minimal distortion and maximum impact.

Indeed, the SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro deliver an extended low-frequency response without complex electronic equalization or processing, instead employing the more elegant combination of exceptional transducer engineering and a marginally larger cabinet volume. Such simplicity reduces phase shift and group delay, aiding the sub integration with partnering monitor loudspeakers to deliver a more balanced and coherent listening experience that combines an extended low-frequency response with outstanding clarity in the upper bass.

Both of the new flagship subwoofers are powered by a 300W class A/B amplifier, hand-built and optimised for fast, dynamic response. Adaptable connectivity and control includes balanced stereo Inputs, balanced (full-range) Outputs, and analogue 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters with multiple crossover options — including an industry-standard 80Hz setting and bypass setting for external processing — while a Pol. (polarity) switch, variable Phase control, and stepped attenuator allow for precise system tuning. The amp also features convenient mute control via footswitch, with daisy-chain capability for multiple subs.

Saying that, the SCS120iW Pro (in-wall) variant offers all the above-mentioned performance attributes, but is optimised for flush in-wall mounting courtesy of a shallower cabinet and recessed rear input connector panel that maximises floor space. An accompanying R1-300 Pro remote-mounted 7U/19” amplifier allows for flexible installation in a suitable wall close to the subwoofer, in a control room rack, or machine room, with connections made via NL4 speaker and 5-pin XLR cables.

The two new subwoofers represent a perfect match for the SCM100ASL Pro, SCM110ASL Pro, and SCM150ASL Pro studio monitors, and also scale effortlessly to larger systems featuring the SCM200ASL Pro and SCM300ASL Pro main monitors. Multiple subs can be employed to elevate performance and fill larger rooms.

Reality dictates, though, that surround and immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos can be demanding of subwoofers, and these two new designs both offer significant performance gains over the smaller SCS70 Pro and outgoing SCM0.1/15SL Pro.

Thanks to employing advanced transducer and amplifier technology, the SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro subs offer increased dynamic range and low frequency extension, strengthening the upper range of ATC’s Professional Product line. It is fair to say that they offer improved subwoofer solutions to users of mid- to large-format monitors and/or those working in larger control rooms, while the increased dynamic range on offer is particular useful in immersive audio and post-production applications where LFE (Low Frequency Effects) content places large demands on subwoofers.

SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro subs are respectively available at an RRP (Recommended Retail Price) of £4,575.00 GBP (excluding VAT) and £5,408.00 GBP (excluding VAT) — including the accompanying R1-300 Pro remote amp (excluding cables), in the latter’s case. About ATC (www.atc.audio/professional/)
Formed in 1974 by Billy Woodman to manufacture custom drive units for the professional sound industry, ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) is a specialist British manufacturer of loudspeaker drive units and complete sound reproduction systems, including all associated electronic equipment. Such systems and components are designed and built in-house to achieve levels of performance far in excess of the industry norm by adopting a thoroughly professional engineering approach to the issues of basic design, materials science, and production technology. The company’s groundbreaking soft-dome mid-range driver technology was originally developed in 1976, revolutionising studio monitoring in the process before becoming recognised as the ultimate mid-range transducer for both domestic and professional applications. After a contract with Danmarks Radio — translating to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation — for an active portable monitor provided the opportunity to integrate the company’s then-new SCM50 and SCM100 speakers with a Tri – AmpPack and electronic crossover to create the industry-standard SCM50A and SCM100A as the first reliable and accurate active systems, that technology is still featured in eight of its monitor models today. The SL (Super Linear) technology found in its Professional Series Monitor bass drive units is arguably the most significant development in transducer design in the last 15 years, reducing 3rd harmonic distortion by 10-15dB between 100Hz and 3kHz, epitomising the company’s commitment to sound quality. Indeed, its accuracy in reproducing piano and male vocals remains unique. Ultimately, the company’s commitment to multi-channel mastering and its direct involvement with leading players in the professional audio industry — including Sony Music and Telarc — has readily resulted in its products being installed in some of the world’s most prestigious multi-channel studios and auditoria.
