Westwood Instruments Present “Lost Piano”, a new piano-based library for Kontakt

Westwood LogoBeautifully worn and naturally warped, Lost Piano is designed to create a mood and inspire the way you play. It’s not a synthesizer but neither is it really a piano anymore; it’s somewhere in-between, a place you’ve not been before. Lost Piano was created for experimentation, created to push the limits on what you thought a piano could sound like.

Made from 32 sets of piano sounds that have been time-stretched and transformed through reel-to-reel, cassette tapes, guitar pedals, along with some unconventional plugin chains.

It also features our new custom Memories engine which generates an intelligent pattern of rhythmic sounds. More character and complexity than an arpeggiator. More curious and unconventional than a delay.

This is for the composers, creators, and music makers that value the way a sound makes you feel.

It’s time to get lost . . .

PIANO SOUNDS
There are 24 different sets of piano sounds and 8 texture pads that can be loaded into 2 sides of the instrument. They have all been painstakingly re-recorded, re-amped and re-worked from the original Alt Piano recording sessions. They have been stretched and transformed through reel-to-reel, cassette tapes, and some of the world’s finest boutique guitar pedals. Some have been further manipulated with a string of unconventional plugin chains.
We also went back to the original piano and recorded some additional interesting sounds using wooden plectrums, drum sticks and palm-muted thumb plucks.

Lost Piano - Main

PIANO TEXTURES
The 8 texture pads have been made using the same re-recording techniques as the other sounds. The feeling of an analog synth, but with the soul of a piano. One of our favorites is called ‘Muddle’ which uses the highly revered, Fairfield Circuitry “Shallow Water” pedal and an Electro Harmonix Octave generator. We re-amped both left and right channels independently, constantly changing the controls of the pedals to give a truly original stereo sound.

MEMORIES
We’ve developed a custom engine called Memories which generates an intelligent pattern of rhythms to accompany your playing. More character and complexity than an arpeggiator. More curious and unconventional than a delay. Turn a simple chord into a rhythmical and moving soundscape of complimentary notes and tones.

Lost Piano - Memories

Choose any of the piano recordings for the Memories engine to play and then tune the sound even more. Make them feel like a recent memory or a long-forgotten and hazy dream. We’ve created 12 presets just for the Memory page, to give you an instant starting point..

REVERB: Film-inspired spaces
We’ve created 12 film-inspired reverb impulses. The room of a Japanese hotel. A ballroom where all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. An empty house used to make soap. A spaceship where Dave is no longer in control. See if you can guess them all.

Lost Piano - Places

DELAY: Delays for days
Think differently about the way you know delay. The built-in delay engine houses 5 different types of delay from a clean digital delay to several vintage and analog inspired delays. Plus a delay we call Haze, where you can create a washed-out shimmery cloud that blurs the line between delay and reverb.

AMBIENCE: Put it in its place
To add some real-world quality we’ve included 6 ambient recordings. From a gentle breeze in woodland to a distant city at night. Instant atmosphere. Instant cinema.

Lost Piano - Process

NOISE: Turn up the character
If you think music shouldn’t sound pristine, there’s a series of 6 analog recorded noises to take the edge off. Worn cassette tape, vinyl crackle, radio static, and the drone of a forgotten machine are among the sounds available to make everything a bit rougher around the edges.

RANDOMISER
: Get lost
Randomize every single sound and control in the whole instrument to take a dive into the unknown. Who knows where you’ll end up. Maybe it will sound like that one time when you were 6 and recorded the family piano on your Dad’s reel-to-reel. Maybe it will sound like the darkest memories of a stranger you’ve never met. Maybe it‘s a sound you never imagined was possible that’s just about to kick start your entire score.

ABOUT WESTWOOD INSTRUMENTS
Virtual instruments for alternative composers

Westwood was born from an idea that composing on a computer would be much better if it felt like you’re writing with a musician and an instrument in front of you. We understand that not everyone has the means, time, or access to live musicians but we know that writing music can often be inspired by experimenting with a real instrument in the room.

Often to us, virtual instruments sound too clean, polished, and have had any natural character stripped from them, which in our minds is the very thing that makes music sound most interesting. We like to find musicians that follow this mindset and will choose instruments that don’t sound too perfect. We then capture real performances with all their individual nuances and playing styles. Sometimes with traditional performance techniques and sometimes with unique and unconventional ideas.

We sample instruments using the world’s best microphones through an impeccable signal chain. Each individual sample is then crafted to shape its character whilst keeping some of its natural flaws. These samples are then wrapped up in a custom virtual instrument made for use in Native Instrument’s Kontakt.
