THE/AUDIO/FIRM announces availability of FURNACE, forging inaugural plug-in as red-hot, three-way saturation processor with mid-side processing

Fazertone - LogoHARPENDEN, HERTFORDSHIRE, UK: founded as a collaboration creatively combining the real-world experience of veteran mix/mastering engineer Sean J Vincent and advanced world-leading DSP (Digital Signal Processing) developments of Vic Lewis of Fazertone, famed for being one of the first companies to emulate analogue gear using neural networks, plug-in developer THE/AUDIO/FIRM is proud to announce availability of FURNACE — forging its inaugural plug-in as a red-hot, three-way saturation processor with mid-side processing — as of December 8…

Its inaugural plug-in has, admittedly, taken time to come to fruition, as attested to by THE/AUDIO/FIRM company co-owner Sean J Vincent: “It’s been coming for ages; about two years ago, I approached a bunch of different plug-in companies with some ideas. I had protracted conversations with a few of them; I started working with one of them for a bit, but we couldn’t really agree on how I wanted this thing to be — it just wasn’t going in the direction I wanted it to go, so I called a halt to it. But I kept my ear to the ground; I was looking for someone I could work with in a much smaller way to just create something exactly as I wanted, and earlier this year I met such a developer — Vic Lewis from Fazertone, who makes fantastic guitar pedal emulations. We had a chat and realized we both wanted to do the same thing. He was very open to my ideas; I was very open to his way of working. We got on straight away and just got on with it. We have a range of plug-ins coming; we’ve been working on this all year, and the first one is ready right now.”

Needless to say, FURNACE makes much use of Fazertone’s famed DSP developments, delivering the authentic sound of tape, transformers, or tube saturation taken directly from real iconic gear and modelled with custom real-time neural networks, forged into a single, red-hot plug-in. Photorealistic in its execution, FURNACE’s gorgeous GUI (Graphical User Interface) is as easy on the eye as it is in use: ultimately, engaging the 456 button realistically replicates analogue tape saturation — captured using a real ½-inch tape machine running Ampex 456 tape; TFM replicates transformer saturation — captured using a pair of 1084 input stages… plus a ‘mystery’ transformer on the output; and AX7 replicates valve/tube saturation — captured using a pair of 12AX7 long-plate tubes running into a Lundahl transformer stage.

Fazertone Furnace - GUI

All are different, sounding just like they should. “We designed the 456 — the tape emulator — so that, no matter what you do with the DRIVE, it’s never going to completely pop off and go nuts; this is designed to sound like tape — not tape being destroyed, so if you set the DRIVE, let’s say, at nine o’clock and the MIX full up, it’s going to sound very subtly like tape.” So says Sean J Vincent, who — with 35 years of sound engineering experience to his notable name — should surely know what he is talking about!

And there are a number of other choice controls with which discerning users can further shape their sound, such as the X button — adds a small amount of transformer warmth and an EQ curve with a slight side push on the highs; indeed, it can even work on its own with no other settings touched — ideal for individual instruments, rather than buses. Beyond that, the MID SIDES (m/s) control allows anyone to focus the saturation anywhere in the stereo field, while the HI BOOST switch provides a little higher frequency boost when needed.

Fortunately for all, FURNACE has been designed to react exactly like hardware; with the INPUT control set at its initial position, there will be a subtle effect — gentle warmth and added thickness without making itself overly obvious, which is ideal for adding analogue vibes to channels and buses. But try pushing that INPUT into the red, however, and things get dirty, making it perfectly possible to add thick distortion to guitars, basses, drums, or anything else for that matter. MIX is always king when it comes to blending in whatever effect FURNACE has been creatively called upon to deliver.

Delivering exactly what it is that FURNACE does took some serious thinking on the part of the dynamic duo involved in its development. Duly giving credit where credit is due, Sean J Vincent admirably admits: “Here’s the thing to bear in mind: I designed what this looked like, and I came up with what it was going to do, but I’ve no clue how to code anything, so that’s where Vic Lewis comes in, and he’s a very smart guy. He’s basically using a neural network interference engine, with detailed circuit analysis and modelling. So it’s running in real-time, doing some incredible stuff — not like anything else I’ve ever heard. It just sounds completely analogue. It’s pretty amazing technology.”

It is, indeed. It is fair to say, then, that FURNACE was well worth the wait for its instigator. “You can tell the tape emulator is really cohesive — it sounds like tape,” Sean J Vincent enthuses, ending on a run of equally high notes: “I think the transformer circuit is probably my favorite; it’s just got that transformer warmth — it sounds like hardware. The tube does that thing — giving it some depth; it really works. To my ears, operating this is very much like operating hardware — that is the key.”

Know this, though: owners of FURNACE can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that it comes complete with a variety of useful presets, professionally propelling them towards the sound of their desired destination, saturation-wise.

Available in AAX, AU, and VST3 formats for Mac (OS X 11 or later, Native M1 or Intel from 2014 or later) and PC (Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11, 64-bit, from 2013 or later) with no iLok required, THE/AUDIO/FIRM’s FURNACE plug-in can be bought directly from Fazertone for £45.00 GBP/€50.00 EUR/$59.99 USD — a 14-day trial version without any limitation is also available to download — here: https://www.fazertone.com/plugin/furnace

Heritage Audio - Herchild 670 Next gen- Featured

Heritage Audio Release HERCHILD 670N, Compresion for the next generation

TO THINK ABOUT WHAT THE FAIRCHILD WOULD BE LIKE IF IT HAD BEEN CONCEIVED IN THE YEAR 2025 IS SOMETHING ONLY HERITAGE AUDIO COULD ACHIEVE

Heritage Audio Logo - Smaller Madrid, Spain: Heritage Audio® is proud to announce the availability of the HERCHILD Next Gen Model 670N, authentic 670 tone crafted for the Next Generation of studios and affordable for any budget. Four years ago, Heritage Audio revolutionized the pro-audio community by introducing the HERCHILD Model 660 and 670, a surgical recreation of the legendary Fairchild Model 660 and 670 by using authentic NOS tubes, carefully designed transformers and nailing the look and feel of the revered originals.

Two years ago, Heritage Audio shook the pro-audio community yet again by introducing the GRANDCHILD 670/500, an unprecedented engineering effort that for many years seemed impossible: getting the sound of the classic Vari-Mu compressor into a 500 series module with an even harder challenge to achieve: making it affordable.

The experience gathered in those two projects made the path clear for what the next generation of Fairchild-type Vari-Mu compressors should be: true to the original sound with added functionalities for modern productions and as affordable as possible. Please welcome the HERCHILD Next Gen Model 670N.

VINTAGE SOUL WITH MODERN CAPABILITIES, AFFORDABLE POWER FOR YOUR STUDIO

Independent bypass, side chain filtering and a thoroughly designed output gain make-up stage for each channel based on our revered transformer coupled HA-880 opamp (that successfully achieves a non-intrusive output gain completely preserving the soul of the HERCHILD Model 670) are some of the never-seen-before modern additions to the Next Gen.

The 6 Attack and Release times have been carefully thought to make it even more flexible than in the original unit. The progressive DC Threshold, combining control of the ratio and the knee (from hard limiting to a very smooth transparent compression).

Powered by the same NOS tubes of the HERCHILD Model 670 and six newly designed custom transformers, the Next Gen will infuse your tracks with rich analog warmth and commanding presence, while remaining remarkably quiet and transparent—perfectly suited for the creative demands of mixing and the precision and finesse of mastering.

In short: The Next Gen will essentially provide the same sound quality of the HERCHILD 670, but with 150% functionality… at a fraction of the price.

THE KING OF COMPRESSORS IS NOW WITHIN REACH OF EVERY BUDGET

The HERCHILD Next Gen is designed for engineers who care about sound and features but have a limited budget. Every design choice serves one goal: deliver the unmistakable Vari-Mu tone heard on thousands and thousands of #1 hit records for the past seven decades with 21st-century reliability and accessibility.

Feel the warmth as it hugs your tracks and breathes new life into them. The Next Gen has the soul of its predecessors, assuring that the king of tube compression sound, that influenced hundreds and hundreds of producers, is now available for you to craft your very own masterpieces without breaking the bank.

Heritage Audio’s HECHILD Next Gen Model 670N is shipping via Heritage Audio’s global network of dealers (https://heritageaudio.com/where-to-buy-international/).

The HECHILD Next Gen Model 670N is available today with an MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of €2999.00 EUR (including VAT) in the EU and a MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) of $2999.00 USD, US distribution being handled via RAD Distribution (https://raddist.com/en/brands/heritage-audio).

ATC SCSI20 - Featured

ATC announces availability of SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro as new flagship 15”/375 mm active subwoofers

ATC - LOGOSTROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK: ATC is proud to announce availability of the free-standing SCS120 Pro and flush in-wall mounting SCS120iW Pro as new flagship 15”/375 mm subwoofers — duly designed to elevate professional monitoring systems to new levels and engineered to support the specialist manufacturer’s larger mid-field and main monitors, delivering exceptional low-frequency extension, expanded dynamic range, and seamless integration for stereo, surround, and immersive formats, including Dolby Atmos — as of November 24…

The two new models build upon the success of the free-standing SCS70 Pro and flush in-wall mounting SCS70iW Pro 12”/300 mm active subwoofers, but both feature a new hand-built 15”/375 mm sub-bass driver, developed and manufactured by ATC at its facility in Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK. Ultimately, all driver components — from the drive system to the suspension — have been precisely optimised using the latest analysis tools available at both small and large signal level. The advanced transducer combines a powerful short-coil motor system featuring optimised airflow and cooling with a carbon-paper composite cone, and results in deep, clean bass from 120Hz down to below 20Hz — and all with minimal distortion and maximum impact.

Indeed, the SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro deliver an extended low-frequency response without complex electronic equalization or processing, instead employing the more elegant combination of exceptional transducer engineering and a marginally larger cabinet volume. Such simplicity reduces phase shift and group delay, aiding the sub integration with partnering monitor loudspeakers to deliver a more balanced and coherent listening experience that combines an extended low-frequency response with outstanding clarity in the upper bass.

Both of the new flagship subwoofers are powered by a 300W class A/B amplifier, hand-built and optimised for fast, dynamic response. Adaptable connectivity and control includes balanced stereo Inputs, balanced (full-range) Outputs, and analogue 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters with multiple crossover options — including an industry-standard 80Hz setting and bypass setting for external processing — while a Pol. (polarity) switch, variable Phase control, and stepped attenuator allow for precise system tuning. The amp also features convenient mute control via footswitch, with daisy-chain capability for multiple subs.

Saying that, the SCS120iW Pro (in-wall) variant offers all the above-mentioned performance attributes, but is optimised for flush in-wall mounting courtesy of a shallower cabinet and recessed rear input connector panel that maximises floor space. An accompanying R1-300 Pro remote-mounted 7U/19” amplifier allows for flexible installation in a suitable wall close to the subwoofer, in a control room rack, or machine room, with connections made via NL4 speaker and 5-pin XLR cables.

The two new subwoofers represent a perfect match for the SCM100ASL Pro, SCM110ASL Pro, and SCM150ASL Pro studio monitors, and also scale effortlessly to larger systems featuring the SCM200ASL Pro and SCM300ASL Pro main monitors. Multiple subs can be employed to elevate performance and fill larger rooms.

Reality dictates, though, that surround and immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos can be demanding of subwoofers, and these two new designs both offer significant performance gains over the smaller SCS70 Pro and outgoing SCM0.1/15SL Pro.

Thanks to employing advanced transducer and amplifier technology, the SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro subs offer increased dynamic range and low frequency extension, strengthening the upper range of ATC’s Professional Product line. It is fair to say that they offer improved subwoofer solutions to users of mid- to large-format monitors and/or those working in larger control rooms, while the increased dynamic range on offer is particular useful in immersive audio and post-production applications where LFE (Low Frequency Effects) content places large demands on subwoofers.

SCS120 Pro and SCS120iW Pro subs are respectively available at an RRP (Recommended Retail Price) of £4,575.00 GBP (excluding VAT) and £5,408.00 GBP (excluding VAT) — including the accompanying R1-300 Pro remote amp (excluding cables), in the latter’s case. Contact authorised ATC distributors and dealers for international availability and pricing here: https://atc.audio/where-to-buy/

About ATC (www.atc.audio/professional/)
Formed in 1974 by Billy Woodman to manufacture custom drive units for the professional sound industry, ATC (Acoustic Transducer Company) is a specialist British manufacturer of loudspeaker drive units and complete sound reproduction systems, including all associated electronic equipment. Such systems and components are designed and built in-house to achieve levels of performance far in excess of the industry norm by adopting a thoroughly professional engineering approach to the issues of basic design, materials science, and production technology. The company’s groundbreaking soft-dome mid-range driver technology was originally developed in 1976, revolutionising studio monitoring in the process before becoming recognised as the ultimate mid-range transducer for both domestic and professional applications. After a contract with Danmarks Radio — translating to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation — for an active portable monitor provided the opportunity to integrate the company’s then-new SCM50 and SCM100 speakers with a Tri – AmpPack and electronic crossover to create the industry-standard SCM50A and SCM100A as the first reliable and accurate active systems, that technology is still featured in eight of its monitor models today. The SL (Super Linear) technology found in its Professional Series Monitor bass drive units is arguably the most significant development in transducer design in the last 15 years, reducing 3rd harmonic distortion by 10-15dB between 100Hz and 3kHz, epitomising the company’s commitment to sound quality. Indeed, its accuracy in reproducing piano and male vocals remains unique. Ultimately, the company’s commitment to multi-channel mastering and its direct involvement with leading players in the professional audio industry — including Sony Music and Telarc — has readily resulted in its products being installed in some of the world’s most prestigious multi-channel studios and auditoria.

Vaults Dulcet Voice - Featured

The Crow Hill Company delivers DULCET VOCAL as iconic free VAULTS centered around Scottish singer-songwriter Dot Allison’s dulcet tone

Crow Hill - LogoEDINBURGH, UK: The Crow Hill Company is proud to deliver …DULCET VOCAL as an iconic, ethereal addition to its free VAULTS… VI (Virtual Instrument) collection — creatively centered around the dulcet tone of the Edinburgh-based enterprise’s very own Dot Allison, an award-nominated Scottish singer-songwriter and composer, duly demonstrating her ability to captivate an audience by simply singing a vowel sound — as of November 19…

Although acting as a smaller sibling to The Crow Hill Company’s DOT ALLISON – DULCET VOICE ‘full-blown’ library in effect, VAULTS – DULCET VOCAL actually adds some effects to expand the sonic palette of anyone adding this rare voice to their creative work. As an award-nominated Scottish singer-songwriter and composer, Dot Allison’s work spans the ambient textures of trip-hop to the organic warmth of folk, first gaining recognition as the vocalist and co-writer of the band One Dove, whose Morning Dove White debut album of 1993 became a cult classic in the era’s electronic underground. Here, her breathy, almost translucent, vocal tone floated above dub rhythms, garnering her instant recognition within the electronic music scene. She subsequently launched her solo career in 1999 with the album Afterglow, which blended downtempo beats with lush orchestration and lyrical melancholy. More recently, 2021’s Heart-Shaped Scars saw Dot Allison stripping the instrumentation down to allow her vocal and lyricism to carry the songs, imbuing that album with a haunting vulnerability.

Outside of her solo work, she has collaborated with American composer, engineer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and studio owner Anton Newcombe — visionary founder and driving force behind Brian Jonestown Massacre, one of the most compelling bands in modern music — to compose the original soundtrack to the TV series Annika, including its arresting opening theme song, while her voice has been featured in a multitude of films and needle-drop TV — the use of a pre-existing song in a TV show to create a powerful, memorable scene or emotional impact, in other words — or in scores through The Crow Hill Company’s in-demand DOT ALLISON – DULCET VOICE library. Creative collaborations with electronic-, neo-psychedelia-, shoegaze-, and trip hop-genre-straddling Death In Vegas; British trip-hop collective Massive Attack; British singer-songwriter and musician Paul Weller; and American-British singer-songwriter and record producer Scott Walker have helped Dot Allison’s voice to remain her defining instrument, permeating all of her projects with a celestial beauty.

And a celestial beauty patently permeates throughout the sound of VAULTS – DULCET VOCAL. Thankfully, The Crow Hill Company’s Theo Le Derf is on hand to dive in. “It’s our VAULTS… GUI, this time in a fresh, mossy green colour,” he begins, before continuing: “The first of the large dials is TIMBRE, which is automatically assigned to MIDI CC1; it’s a dynamic filter, which allows you to change tonal quality and volume of the sound. The second large dial is SCATTER, which allows you to blend in short, fragmented vocal flurries and unmeasured tremolos performed by Dot herself. The small dials are more concentrated effects, the first being REPEAT, which slices, repeats, and reverses the vocal performance; this is tempo-synced to your DAW, so whatever BPM you’re in, it will follow that. MOD is a frequency shifter-based modulation effect, which adds a lot of width and depth to your sound. ECHO is a beautiful stereo ping-pong delay, which adds dimension to the sound. And SPLOSH is our signature lush reverb, which we use for all the VAULTS… releases.”

Resurfacing musically refreshed from his guided tour, Theo Le Derf draws things to an appropriate close, clearly impressed: “It’s an honour to be able to access Dot Allison’s voice so readily in this free library, and I’ll be sure to use it in future compositions. Your support of this platform really helps us out so much, and you can look forward to more exciting VAULTS… releases — just like this one — in the near future.”

VAULTS… releases from The Crow Hill Company — including …DULCET VOCAL — are free for all to download and make music with for the rest of their lives from here: https://thecrowhillcompany.com/vaults/

Heritage Audio was founded in 2011 by Peter Rodriguez. As a civil engineer and music producer, he went from building wind turbines to following his true passion — developing recording equipment with the vintage sound that he himself admired so much and so many others yearned for. Fortunately for all, he was able to master the key elements necessary to make high-quality recording gear affordable and reliable by combining his analytical mindset with his experience as a producer within a relatively short space of time. Today, the 15-person team has expanded its production plant located in the heart of Madrid, Spain, where it collectively continues to follow a philosophy of making vintage sound possible for today’s studios, successfully introducing innovative products to rank amongst the most popular brands with top retailers throughout the world.

Cherry Audio - Mercury 8 Featured

Cherry Audio Release – MERCURY 8

Cherry Audio LogoCherry Audio has announced the launch of Mercury-8, an innovative software synthesizer that faithfully replicates the iconic Jupiter-8 from 1981. Available now for just $69, this “Ultimate Eight” combines the authentic sound of the legendary hardware with new features that enhance its creative possibilities for modern music producers and synthesizer enthusiasts.

Mercury-8 synthesizer utilizes advanced circuit and behavioral modeling to achieve unparalleled sonic accuracy. Unlike sample-based emulators, Mercury-8 utilizes virtual analog synthesis, offering comprehensive, dynamic control over all synthesis parameters while remaining compact.

Its dual-layer architecture allows for 16 polyphonic voices per layer, enabling musicians to easily create complex, evolving soundscapes through powerful split and stacked modes. Additionally, the synthesizer includes authentic analog drift and condition controls, allowing sound designers and players to fine-tune the instrument’s character, from pristine and modern to beautifully unstable and vintage. Mercury-8 not only captures the unique sound and essence of the JP-8 but also supports data exchange with MIDI-modified hardware.

The instrument goes beyond simple emulation, featuring an extensive array of tools designed for modern production workflows. It offers a comprehensive modulation matrix, a syncable arpeggiator, and a programmable 16×4 polyphonic step sequencer. Mercury-8 also includes three independent, customizable effect chains, each equipped with 20 studio-quality effects, including the new DCO Chorus, Panner, and Pulser effects. Its unique architecture enables direct import and export of original JP-8 patch bank SysEx data, effectively bridging the gap between vintage hardware and contemporary software.

With more than 600 professionally designed presets, including precise recreations of the original JP-8 factory patches, users can start creating music right away. Additionally, for those seeking extra inspiration, The Grid Preset Pack by renowned producer Michael Oakley is exclusively available from Cherry Audio for $9.99. Featuring lush pads, dynamic arpeggios, and sequences that showcase the full potential of Mercury-8, this pack includes 100 additional presets inspired by the synthwave genre.

Mercury-8 also highlights Cherry Audio’s ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional sound at an unbeatable price. Priced at just $69, Mercury-8 is an ideal choice for synth enthusiasts who seek outstanding performance, features, and affordability. Additionally, until December 1st at cherryaudio.com, customers can take advantage of Cherry Audio’s Build Your Own Bundle promotion. They can select the Pick 3 bundle for $99 (regularly $129) or the Pick 6 bundle for $149 (regularly $169), allowing them to mix and match any of Cherry Audio’s award-winning instruments for as low as $25 per plugin.

Mercury-8 is also available as part of Cherry Audio’s new Synth Stack 6 collection, which bundles 36 of their acclaimed plugins at an affordable price. About Sarah Nicolls

Sarah Nicolls is a pianist who has spent her life stretching what’s possible on the piano. Starting as a classically-trained prodigy, while studying in London Sarah got into playing the latest classical music and won the British Contemporary Piano Competition in 2000. She premiered multiple piano concertos with orchestras like the London Sinfonietta and ASKO/Schonberg Ensemble, including special commissions from the BBC and works including Larry Goves, Richard Barrett, Niccolo Castiglioni, Wolfgang Rihm.

Scores by living composers often asked her to play quite literally in the ‘inside’ of the instrument – playing directly on the strings. The sounds were lush and they were there to be explored so Sarah started improvising and messing about with electronics. She formed a band with Mira Calix and David Sheppard, putting out an EP on Warp Records. But these extra sounds were hard to reach. Standing up to lean inside the grand piano, Sarah thought – how about we change the shape of the piano? She built her first ‘Inside-out Piano’ in 2008. With £500 to spend, she hacked apart an upright and stuck it back together with some steel legs made by a Liverpudlian ship builder. In 2014, she collaborated with Pierre Malbos to re-shape an Érard grand which became a sculptural feast of an instrument, standing 2.5m tall and able to swing.

On these instruments, Sarah has found her compositional voice. Sarah has made shows about motherhood and climate change (working with climate scientists across the UK, ‘12 years’ was a Guardian Autumn 2020 Top Pick and was featured on BBC 4’s Front Row). She’s been a soloist in the PRSF New Music Biennial and Matthew Herbert’s 20 Pianos project, is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and has had residencies at Southbank Centre’s Collision programme, Artangel’s Library of Water in Iceland, the Arvon writing centre The Hurst and Snape Maltings Festival of New. In 2023, Sarah became one of Innovate UK’s Women in Innovation, and has recently won a Creative Catalyst award to work with the astonishing world-leading structural engineer Neil Thomas and his company Atelier One, who have worked on structures including World Building of the Year ‘Gardens by the Bay’ in Singapore. She is aiming to produce a lightweight, acoustic vertical grand piano. Sarah is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in Music and Engineering at King’s College, London and a recipient of the Arts Council England ‘Develop Your Creative Practice’ award.
