NY Philharmonic Schoeps - Featured

Behind the Scenes of the NY Philharmonic with Audio Director Larry Rock and Schoeps Microphones

Grammy-winning producer details his techniques and workflows for capturing one of the world’s finest orchestras in exclusive video interview

Schoeps at the NY Philharmonic | In Tune With SCHOEPS

The NY Philharmonic has played a vibrant role in championing orchestral music of all stripes in the United States since its founding in the late 1800s. A major part of that has been its forward-thinking approach to programming that embraces a wide variety of genres, performers, and presentation formats – including free outdoor park concerts, showcase events for up and coming composers and performers, and live orchestration of beloved blockbuster films. Rock’s role in all of this is maintaining an extremely high standard of audio production that translates equally well across live, broadcast, and recorded mediums.

Capturing an ‘embellished sense of reality’, as he describes it, has been a key part of Rock’s success. This has led him to build off of the natural performance energy and individual details audible in the orchestra and utilize his command of recording and production techniques to create something that is an elevated experience for the listener. “There’s a concept of sound, of having the right balance, amount of presence, and a sense of ambiance,” he explains. “What is very important [to that] is the off-axis response of microphones because that’s where you pick up all the subtleties of the ambiance of the room.”

“Getting a sound that’s warm and clear, that is not at all harsh on the high end, that’s the objective,” he continues.

A Schoeps user since the early 1970s across a variety of mediums, Rock has made the Colette series a key part of his production workflows. He cites the microphones’ clarity and natural quality as being an important asset to orchestral recording – one that has helped shape the sound of the modern orchestra across the world. “Schoeps has worked out how to make condenser mics sound warm,” he states. “Everyone agrees they are the best.”

“There’s no question that the Schoeps in general, and specifically the Colette series, is a standard in the industry. What else can you say?”

Heritage Audio Introduces TAPEoPLEX a Native Version of a legendary Tape Delay

“THE BEST SOUNDING TAPE DELAY PLUG-IN AVAILABLE TODAY”

Madrid, Spain: Heritage Audio® is proud to announce the availability in native form of the Heritage TAPEoPLEX tape delay plugin.  Based on the beloved vintage tape delay used by everyone from Eddie Van Halen to Brian May, Jimmy Page, Neil Young and many others, the Heritage TAPEoPLEX just nails the sound of the most famous tape echo unit of all time.

Ranging from soft and clean delays to distorted repeats that lead to self-oscillation, the warmth and space that the TAPEoPLEX adds to your tracks is unmatched by any tape delay plugin in the market.

USING 2025 TECHNOLOGY TO FULLY RECREATE THE SOUND OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER ECHO MACHINE

It was about time someone got serious about recreating the legendary tape delay sound to today’s standards and the use of today’s technology to carefully model this plugin from an original unit (Serial # 34553) is the real secret behind the sound of the TAPEoPLEX, making it the best sounding tape delay plug-in available today. And taking advantage of the extra options that a plug-in allows, the TAPEoPLEX is now a full independent stereo unit where you can choose different echo times for the L and R channel or link them to have the same or different delay time constant on each side, following either the same tempo or the DAW’s tempo.

An additional control even allows to choose the amount of freshness of the tape, adding color and a slight harmonic distortion to your tracks when needed.

THE HERITAGE AUDIO WAY

With the release of the Heritage TAPEoPLEX native plugin, the Spanish company is releasing a tool that aims to boost creativity and put the focus back on the ‘music’ in music production.

The Heritage TAPEoPLEX is available for free to owners of any i73® PRO audio interface family and at a price of €99.00 EUR/$99.00 USD for everyone else.

About UnitedPlugins: As implied in the carefully chosen wording for an apt appellation that really represents how the Prague-registered Limited Company came about and what it collectively creates, United Plugins is a federation of small, independent development teams comprised of individuals involved in the music industry. Indeed, the founding triad of FireSonic, JMG Sound, and SounDevice Digital can count engineers, producers, and artists amongst their ‘united’ names. Needless to say, all were seeking the freedom to create the tools that they would like to use in their studios and on their projects. And all agreed that this could be better achieved when working together. Though UnitedPlugins’ proliferating product portfolio may not always be for the musical masses, surely someone, somewhere will always find those tools to be a perfect fit for their own music productions… just like those inventive individuals behind United Plugins’ partner brands, the ranks of which have since swelled to include Muramasa Audio and MeldaProduction. Thanks to the latter letting United Plugins utilize its super-easy licensing system, which is why selected MeldaProduction products are also available from the United Plugins website, a thriving future for the federation is assured.

Rhodes - Wurli Plugin

Rhodes Music Introduces the Rhodes Wurli Plug-in: A Faithful Recreation of the Classic Reed-Based Electric Piano

Rhodes - Black LogoLeeds, United Kingdom, June 3, 2025 — Rhodes Music expands its virtual instrument lineup with the Rhodes Wurli — a deeply musical recreation of the iconic reed-based electric piano sound that shaped some of the most enduring records of the past five decades.

Timeless Tone, Modern Performance
Rhodes Wurli draws on the character of legendary reed-based electric pianos introduced in the 1970s — celebrated for their compact design, midrange-forward bite, and dynamic, expressive tone. Its unmistakable tone became a fixture on classic records by artists like Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Supertramp, and Beck — and continues to inspire musicians working across many genres today.

“As part of our ever-expanding library of classic instruments, we’re proud to share our own take on the iconic reed-based electric piano,” says Dan Goldman, Chief Product Officer at Rhodes Music. “Sampled by the same expert team behind the Rhodes V8 and Anthology plug-ins, Rhodes Wurli brings the 200A to a whole new level of musicality and playability. Paired with Anthology’s powerful sound-shaping tools, effects, and intuitive interface, the result is something truly special — raw, warm, and beautifully expressive.”

  • Screenshot

Vintage Feel, Contemporary Control
Built on the same robust engine as Rhodes Anthology, Rhodes Wurli features a vintage-style interface that nods to the original’s front panel design. Retro LED indicators, classic rotary dials, and intuitive navigation create a UI that balances nostalgia with modern workflow enhancements.

Users can dial in unique textures using tools like:

  • Timbre Shift: Revoice the instrument in real time.
  • Global Tune: Match your session’s tuning with precision.
  • Authentic Vibrato: Modeled after the classic hardware circuit for added vintage warmth.

Rhodes Wurli also introduces two new authentic models of the 200A’s amplifier and front-facing panel mounted speakers — known for their midrange bite and natural breakup — alongside the amp models already familiar to Rhodes users.

Pricing and Availability
Rhodes Wurli is available now in VST, AU, and AAX formats through the official Rhodes Music store.

Standard Pricing:

  • GBP: £89.95 (Inc VAT)
  • EUR: €99.95 (+ local taxes)

Frap Tools - Magnolia - Featured

Frap Tools Unveils MAGNOLIA a high-end West Coast Keyboard Synthesizer at Superbooth25

MEDOLLA, ITALY: Frap Tools, hitherto known as a manufacturer of Eurorack modules and accessories alongside professional audio compressors in the 500-Series format, is proud to venture into the world of high-end keyboard synthesizers with its introduction of MAGNOLIA — announced as an 8-VOICE ANALOG THRU-ZERO FM SYNTHESIZER built to unlock every sound associated with ‘West Coast’ modular synthesis through a classic keyboard interface — anchored around showcasing two pre-production units at SUPERBOOTH25, May 8-10, FEZ-Berlin, Germany…

As an 8-VOICE ANALOG THRU-ZERO FM SYNTHESIZER, MAGNOLIA unlocks every sound associated with the so-called ‘West Coast’ modular synthesis world with waveshapers, wavefolders, and, most importantly, analog linear TZFM (Through-Zero Frequency Modulation) Indeed, its intentions are made clear from the outset by the on point wording worked tastefully into its (initial) top panel design. No need to necessarily remain there, though, for fat resonant filters and powerful analogue oscillators also allow for more traditional subtractive synthesis sounds. And although a deep and flexible modulation section encourages complex patches with the push of a button and twist of a knob, switching modulations on and off with the TOGGLE function, it is always easy to keep track of what is going on thanks to the inclusion of LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) on every source and destination.

Digging deeper, MAGNOLIA features eight analogue voices with two oscillators — carrier and modulator — and 24 dB/oct resonant HIGH-PASS and LOW-PASS filters; the carrier oscillator has a through-zero core for precise, sideband-rich analogue FM (Frequency Modulation) sounds, so crystal-like pads to growling basses are available to all with the greatest of ease, while FM can be applied to the filters. Furthermore, sculpting sounds that have not been heard before on analogue polysynths are now perfectly possible, thanks to MAGNOLIA’s unique signal flow — think continuously variable waveform shapes and a wavefolder circuit per voice!

Those two oscillators are derived from Frap Tools’ BRENSO (https://frap.tools/products/brenso/), a Euroack module readily representing its creator’s primary analogue source of articulated waveforms whose degree of entanglement can be precisely set by the musician. MAGNOLIA’s Oscillator 1 is the ‘West Coast’ one with TZFM, wavefolder, and FLIP SYNC, while Oscillator 2 is the ‘East Coast’ one, with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and fine-tune. Whether wanting experimental FM sounds or punchy synth brass, they are always at anyone’s service. Speaking of Frap Tools’ unique modular soul, MAGNOLIA’s filter section is derived from CUNSA (https://frap.tools/products/cunsa/) — itself a quadruple analogue ping-able multimode resonant filter, saturator, mixer, and oscillator, no less!

Frap Tools - Magnolia - Keyboard view

Musically, MAGNOLIA sports a keyboard from fellow Italians FATAR, with polyphonic aftertouch capabilities for enhanced expressiveness, while a per-part ARPEGGIATOR and per-part 16-step SEQ (sequencer) serve to creatively complement the synthesizer still further. Features briefly worth drawing attention to here by way of ending on some more high notes include MAGNOLIA’s bi-timbral programs (with SINGLE, MORPH, DUAL, and SPLIT MODES); all-analogue signal path; three loop-able DAHDSR (DELAY, ATTACK, HOLD, DECAY, SUSTAIN, and RELEASE) envelopes; three digital LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators); and 512 preset memory slots.

Anyone attending SUPERBOOTH25, May 8-10, FEZ-Berlin, Germany can get up close and personal with two MAGNOLIA pre-production units by swinging by Booth B049 there. Their creators will be showcasing them personally, eager to show the results of their hard work, while providing a passionate warm welcome. Frap Tools aim to release MAGNOLIA as a production product by the end of summer, albeit with some differences evident by then. The interface will likely be more refined, featuring digital effects, while some features currently under evaluation could conceivably be removed.

While Frap Tools’ Eurorack modules and accessories, plus professional audio compressors in the 500-Series format, are available to purchase online directly from its website (https://frap.tools/), any retailers interested in stocking and selling MAGNOLIA — when available as a production product — are invited to contact worldwide distributor Alex4 Distribution (https://www.alex4.de/) here: info@alex4.de

For more in-depth information, please visit the dedicated MAGNOLIA webpage here: https://frap.tools/magnolia

Clatters Machines announces Sonora, spectral mixing output module the ultimate sound stage for Eurorack setups

SAN BENEDETTO DEL TRONTO, ITALY: small town lovers of music and electronic instruments Clatters Machines is proud to announce availability of its Sonora spectral mixing output module — aimed at acting as the ultimate sound stage for Eurorack setups by being marketed as a place where all of a user’s mixes meet to find a stereophonic solution for the final track, thanks to 12 fixed panning inputs that allow each track to breathe in its own space while also determining its importance in the stereo field — as of May 23…

Translated to generally meaning sound (in English), sonora is actually an Italian feminine adjective that stands for loud, resonant, ringing, and sonic — depending on the context in which it is used; however, in the context of Sonora being aimed at acting as the ultimate sound stage for Eurorack setups as Clatters Machines’ latest module, who better, then, to introduce it than company Co-founder, engineer, designer Michelangelo Nasso. “A compact, final sound stage module was an obvious — and needed — choice for us,” he begins, before briefly detailing how it came into being: “As musicians, we’ve always struggled with headphone/output/mixing modules. Most modules in this field take up way too much space inside a case — space that we’d prefer to fill with other effects, sound sources, and utilities. And although some other output modules are super-small, which is nice, they usually lack features, so we tried to solve this problem with what we think is the perfect combination of what’s already out there.”

Think 12 pre-panned audio inputs — including two hard-left inputs, two hard-right inputs, two mid-left inputs, two mid-right inputs, one low-left input, one low-right input, and two mono inputs. “So Sonora has 12 pre-panned audio inputs, which is great if you’re composing with multiple sound sources,” says Michelangelo Nasso, continuing: “We came up with the idea of additionally assigning a fixed panning space to each input, so the possibility of creating a perfectly stereo balanced final track is pretty straightforward.”

Further features abound, as Michelangelo Nasso notes: “Once we created what is basically a spectral 12-input summing mixer, we decided to go all in and added all the features we think are a must for an end-of-chain module, such as a 3.5mm stereo HEADPHONES socket, with dedicated volume control and stereo LED loudness indicators; 3.5mm pro LINE outputs; stereo LED meter, with a 0dB reference indicator; and a soft clipping limiter circuit, which we believe is always handy, both to protect your gear and spice things up!”

And as if that is not an exciting enough prospect in itself, all those features fit neatly into a 6HP-wide module with an anodized brush aluminum front panel that is available in either black or silver, so standing out from the sound of the crowd with what is surely the ultimate sound stage for a Eurorack setup also applies to what a Sonora purchaser prefers that proposition to look like.

Sonora is available worldwide — with a choice of silver- or black-colored aluminum front panels — from Clatters Machines’ growing global network of retailers (https://clattersmachines.com/retailers-3/) or directly via its online Store (https://clattersmachines.com/shop/) for €245.00 EUR (plus VAT).

About Clatters Machines (www.clattersmachines.com)
As a small company based in an equally small Italian town by the Adriatic Sea, but with a big love for music and electronic instruments, Clatters Machines is the direct result of respectively realizing two musicians’ wishes — the search for an instrument meeting specific needs and the desire for something musical married with design flair. Fortunately for all concerned, the resulting purist approach to design and fabrication allowed a perfect blend of form and, of course, sound. Since all of the company’s products are entirely soldered and assembled by hand, high production times for small stock quantities are inevitable, but the results clearly speak volumes about the love involved in their creation and are always well worth the wait!
